Description

We found this piece of pottery/stoneware in my father's estate and know nothing about it whatsoever.  I am assuming there was a lid and a handle at some point. Can anyone tell me what this type of item is called, what it's made of, and if it has any kind of value?

Thank you!

We are from Michigan as was my father. He had it on his kitchen counter for years with cooking utensils in it. That's all we know about it. Am I correct that the areas on the sides would have been for a handle and there would also have been a lid?

Thank you very much for your help!
