Stump Speaker Mechanical Bank (Original 1886)

By BKG, 8 November, 2010
Description

I have an original Stump Speaker mechanical bank. I know that these were made by the Shepard Hardware Co. of Buffalo NY in the 1880s and early 90s, and this one is inscribed with "Pat. June 8, 1886" on the bottom. This piece has the spot for the trap door in the back, although it is missing the door and key. It also has a crack on the topp "deck" where the figure is standing, and it looks like another crack has been repaired in the past. The paint is still in pretty average shape compared to many of the other pieces I've seen online, and the mechanism works well still. I know that these in mint condition have been appraised at as much as $8k - $12k, and I find many online for around $3k. I know with the damage this could be worth considerably less than that, but I don't know exactly how much. Please take a look at the photos, I'm very interested to see how much this is worth. Thanks very much.
