Description

Interesting piece of maritime folk art from Erie, PA.

Painted designs on top of shell, with scrimshaw inscription and detailed map on bottom of shell showing buildings and dock. Inscription reads "Found on the beach at Massasoggy Point on Sunday, May 15, 1887 by J.M. Neff", with detailed map of Presque Isle Bay, Presque Island, in Lake Erie off the shore of Erie, PA.

Bottom portion of shell needs repair from naturaly occuring crack - easy restoration. Nice legible scrimshaw and vivid colors on painted surfaces.

I am looking for an approximate value of this item for insurance purposes.
