Unique Antique Folding Table

By swilliamson71, 3 January, 2025
Description

Hello,

I bought this table recently and it’s in great condition. It has the name Joe Goss stamped on it and the word “FINN” or at least looks like FINN. I researched Joe Goss and the only information found was a boxer. Can you give me any information on how old you think it is, value, and how I can identify who Joe Goss was?

Antique Folding Table

Item Description:
This is a folding wooden table in excellent condition, featuring a functional mechanism with springs for stability and portability. The table has “Joe Goss” stamped on its underside, with an additional word, possibly “FINN,” faintly visible in pencil. The wood has a warm finish with minor surface wear consistent with age, but the construction appears sturdy and intact.

Distinguishing Features:

  • Stamp: The name “Joe Goss” is prominently stamped on the underside.
  • Mechanism: Functional spring-loaded folding legs, which suggest the table was designed for portability or temporary use.
  • Material: Solid wood with visible grain patterns, possibly walnut or mahogany, based on the images.
  • Condition: Excellent, with minor surface scratches but no structural damage.

Historical Context:
The name Joe Goss likely refers to a manufacturer, retailer, or previous owner rather than the famed 19th-century boxer of the same name. Folding tables with spring mechanisms became popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries for their practicality, especially for events, dining, or small spaces. The lack of additional branding or labels suggests it may have been custom-made or locally produced, rather than a mass-market item.

The possible pencil marking, “FINN,” could indicate a craftsman, retailer, or owner but would require further investigation to confirm.

Age Estimate:
Based on the construction style, materials, and mechanism, the table is likely from the early to mid-20th century (1920–1950). The presence of a stamped name instead of a full manufacturer label aligns with smaller-scale or local production during this time.

Market Value:

  1. Comparable Sales:
    • Folding antique wooden tables with functional mechanisms typically sell for $75 to $150, depending on condition, material, and provenance.
    • Unique features, like the stamped name or excellent condition, can increase value slightly.
  2. Estimated Value:
    • Given its excellent condition, sturdy construction, and functional mechanism, this table is likely worth $100 to $150 in the current market.

Recommendations for Further Research:

  1. Research “Joe Goss” Stamp:
    • Consult local historical societies or furniture experts for records of craftspeople or manufacturers in your region.
    • The stamp may refer to a carpenter, retailer, or workshop active in the early 20th century.
  2. Investigate “FINN” Marking:
    • Look for additional pencil marks or engravings on the table that could provide clues about its origin or history.

Care and Maintenance:

  • Preservation: Apply a light furniture polish or wax to maintain the wood’s finish and protect against wear.
  • Usage: Avoid placing heavy items on the table to preserve its folding mechanism and structural integrity.

Professional Appraisal:
An in-person professional appraisal is recommended to:

  1. Confirm the table’s material and construction techniques.
  2. Authenticate the “Joe Goss” marking and determine its origin.
  3. Provide a more precise valuation, particularly if the table has historical or regional significance.

Conclusion:
This antique folding table is a well-crafted, practical piece with potential historical significance tied to the stamped name. Its excellent condition and functional design make it a valuable addition to any collection or functional space.
