Throughout our lifetime we may have occasions when we need to know the value of an item, whether it be a single item or an entire collection/estate. Our reasons vary from curiosity about a family heirloom to estate division purposes (fair market value) to valuation for insurance (retail replacement value). At these times it is important to know a reputable professional appraiser to contact.
Phillip B. Solomon has a reputation based on training, credentials, and experience you can trust. He has been engaged in the appraising of decorative and fine arts since 1972.
Prior to that, he held the position of Curator of Decorative Arts of the Indianapolis Museum of Art for five years. He is an associate member of the American Society of Appraisers and a member of the Mid-American Antique Appraisers Association. He has a B.A. in History from Missouri Valley College. He attended the English National Trust summer school and has since led numerous study trips to English country houses. He is a co-founder and lifetime member of the Decorative Arts Society of the IMA and lectures on furniture history and the decorative arts, having taught courses in decorative arts at IUPUI for many years.
Typical items Mr. Solomon appraises include furniture, paintings, prints, sculpture, china, crystal and silver.
