Nearly all of these things I've seen are fakes. It's a big market, fake slave tags from cities that never issued them, locks for slaves from non existent police forces etc.... Lovejoy

How dare anyone list such an object of atrocity as this as "memorabilia". The ONLY place such at item SHOULD even exist is in an historical museum. The shame of having someone list anything this offensive be from Birmingham, Alabama is almost too much to bear. Whoever the poor unfortunate soul was that was forced to wear this torturous device, I am sure that he has descendants living today. I would be willing to bet that they wouldn't even want to own such proof of the depravity of mankind. This is not some prize to be treasured. As stated above, if this item should even exist, it should only be in an historical museum. Wow, I bet survivors of the Holocaust would LOVE to see people bidding on the gold fillings from the teeth of their ancestors, who were put to death after having the teeth containing this gold yanked from their mouths; being sold as "memorabilia"!

You don't have any idea what the hell you're talking about...................History is history.....and these DO EXIST, and they serve as indicators of a part of this countrys history that should be never forgotten..............I could go on, but I feel like I'm speaking to a complete idiot...

All the slave collars I have seen read "Negroes" not nigger. There is a website showing fake collars bought online and there are a lot of them. Came across a newspaper article with some guy proudly displaying his "slave collar", a few searches later I came across a Civil War Historian who wrote a letter about the same article stating it was a fake collar. I think that this history is good to know but I agree that things like slave items should be in museums and not on the web where people are profitting off others misfortune and tormented life. Personally I think this posting is fake as he never returned with his photos.

I know this is a very old post but stumbled on it during a search.

I bought Real 1849 Slave Collar. It was the first one that I had ever seen in my 70 some years and right after that, I saw two more. I love surfing
the net but find many of the comments posted infuriating. I believe that many are posted by kids under 10 and they love to use the F word.. as well as stupid and ignorant people. Foul mouth and non related comments should net get posted. As in this one about the the holocaust or slavery. It is history.. NO you should not keep dragging slavery and the holocaust into the present all the time... You can not move forward by dragging the past with you all the time as some do...BUT it should not be forgotten. I took interest in the one that I bought because I was trying to get more insight on the history of it.. It had Masonic emblems on all four corners as well as many other emblems stamped into it. I can understand the slave collar and the fact that the owner was a Mason.. Back then, if you were anyone of prominence in society, you were a Mason. They are what founded this great and wonderful country which will be no more in the near future. I can understand the fact that the Masonic Emblems were on the collar,,, but why all the other emblems on it? I am a Past Master and am studying the history of the past.. and I am talking about the past before the building of the pyramids, or the Mayan and Incan buildings.. I do not believe that the people of Egypt built the pyramids nor did the Mayans and Incan build those structures on the Nazca Plains.

One last comment... My collar was owned by Sackett & Wellington of Richmond Virginia and it states that they dealt in Horses Tobacco & Nice Niggers

I to am a Mason and PM.   I've been a collector and dealer of Masonic pharaphernalia for a number of years now.  I had an occasion to research a collar I saw on ebay that sounds just like the one you are describing as it to had a Masonic symbol stamped on the front plate.  It was dated 1854 I believe and I was sceptical because the S&C had the letter G in the middle.  The letter G wasn't really put with the S&C until the 1860s and didn't really become prevelent until at least the 1870s.  While it's possible a S&C with the letter G could have been made in the 1850s, it would be rather unlikely in my opinion based on my reseach of the subject.  My research on the collar quickly turned up that it was indeed a fake.  Apparently there were quite a number of these made by some unknown person in the 1970s.  They all have the same manner of construction, same die stamp fonts and symbols.  If you look at the bottom of the page for this link http://www.savage-station.com/page4.html  you will see an example of what I'm talking about.  If your collar looks I this one, then it's mostly a fake.  Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
