1786 "Santa Barbara" Bell

Description

On one side is raised engraving with "1786" on one side and "Santa Barbara" engraved on the opposite side. The piece is in excellent condition and appears to be cast of brass. The ringer is intact and has a very nice tone.

I am extremely interested in the History of this bell and the "Religious 1874 French Bell" I posted a few days ago.

ANYONE WHO CAN GIVE ME ANY INFORMATION ON THE HISTORY AND VALUE OF THESE 2 BELLS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Nearly all these bells are commemorative pieces, made well after the date embossed on them. Generally the date just indicates when the founding date of the City/Town/Mission was established and not when the bell was produced. Value wise, most sell for lessthan $75.00

Thank you very much for your reply. The dates have already been established but if you can give me a more detailed history it would be appreciated. The history of the bells is really the main thing we are trying to find if anyone can direct me to a website to get started.

Not much to tell really, these are really just another form of tourist souvenir sold all over the world at historical sites, in some cases the design unchanged for over 100 years. They are certainly not rare, nor is there much demand for them.

Lovejoy

Hello Gary,

I have an identical bell to yours. Did you find any more information about this bell other than what you heard from these other posts on this site?

Thanks,

Justin

Hi

Just wanted to let you know that I have the same bell. It had always been in the family from my Dads side. His family had come from Kutna Hora, czech Republic.. Two years ago when we went to Kutna Hora we had the privelege to to go thruogh St, Barbara's Cathederal. I'm sure that is where this bell came from. As I said, this bell was always in our house. I did not ever put it all together untill now.My Grandfather came to the US from Kutna Hora around 1850.
