The complete frame measures 43 x 55 cms. The actual piece measures 21 x 29. It appears to be of a child crossing sweeper. I presume it is a print of a drawing. On the print is the name “Marie Seymour Lucas”. This name is again signed directly below. To the right of this is the signature of “ Arthur J Turrell”. Between the bottom of the print and these signatures in small neat copperplate is written: “ London. Published in the year 1908 by J P Mendoza Ltd. Printsellers and Publishers to the late Queen Victoria. The Mendoza Gallery 157A New Bond Street. W. Copyright” At the top of the print in even smaller copperplate are the words: “Copyright in the United States of America by J P Mendoza Ltd London in the year 1908”. Research tells me that Marie Seymour Lucas(1855 – 1921) was born in Paris and studied art in Paris, London, and Germany. Her birth name was Maria Elizabeth Cornelissen, but she evidently painted and exhibited under the name "Marie Cornelissen" as well as under "Mrs. John Seymour Lucas" after she married the historical painter by that name in 1877. Arthur J Turrell was an architectural etcher (born 1871) the son of Arthur Turrell, one of the most active engravers of the late 19th century. The frame was done locally – the details on the back suggest some time between 1908 and 1930 (although I could probably find out more accurately with local research). My mother in law died recently and she had found this picture in her loft when she moved in 1962. Beyond this we know nothing. I would be very grateful if anyone can either add to or correct our findings. And of course, finally, is it worth anything?!

<p>Values for an artist's work ebbs and flows with Fad and Fashion. In the current market demand for the work of Marie Seymour Lucas is limited and very little ihjn the way of prints, etchings and lithographs by her has been offered at auction in recent years. Even original oils by her have sold within the last tyear for less than $1000.00 at auction.
