Jasperware Cake dish and bottom

By steveking, 13 October, 2007
Description

I have a piece of china/pottery that was handed down to me that I'm curious about. I have attached a couple of small pictures to help you. The only marking on the bottom of this Cheese Dish or Cake Dish, is the capital letter Q.
An appraisal was done on this in 1975, in Merrit Island, Florida, and the value was estimated at $5000US, description says...

asperware covered Cheese Dish by Enoch Wood. Bottom chipped, Circa 1884 (Wedgwood)
Any additional help or explanation is appreciated.

I don't know who did the

I don't know who did the appraisal in 1975, but they were totally out to lunch. It is  a jasperware style cheese dome, but Enoch Wood had nothing to do with Wedgwood and by 1884 his pottery had been closed for 37 years ;~).

Jasperware was developed by Wedgwood in the 1760's and widely copied by a large number of companies, but most used very little in the way of markings until the late 19th Century, but the Enoch Wood and Wedgwood examples were well marked.

On the original jasperware the color goes right through the pottery body, most of the copies had a deep blue, or green "dip" glaze on the exterior. Value wise, today comparable chees domes sell at auction in the $300.00- $600.00 range.

So it sounds like this is an old cheese dish from the 1800's, but it's a copy from some other company then right?  In which case we would be very fortunate to get from $300-600 for it.   Would eBay be a good route or is there another way to sell it?

The price quoted is for your

The price quoted is for your average Victorian jasper style Cheese dome by makers other than Enoch Wood or Wedgwood. Ebay is a strange market , some things go higher than retail, other sell for far less than their worth. If you are going to sell on Ebay put a reserve price on it towards the low end of my estimate.
