Capodimonte porcelain statue of an old man with an oyster in hand

By dcundieff, 22 October, 2007
Description

This piece depicts an old man sitting on a pile of rocks with his bag of oysters. He stares intently at the beautiful pearl in the palm of his hand. The colors are shade of light tan and blue grays. The band around his cap is navy blue and his pants are a shade lighter. There is a red anchor on his shirt with a chain around it. The delicate detailing is evident in the wrinkles in his clothing, his face and beard, his toes and fingers, and the flesh tones in the skin are amazing. The piece is marked under with the trademark "N" with a crown above in Blue. Also the words "Made in ITALY" are hand printed in black. On the backside of the piece is a signature inside a scroll "VoC lol" with an accent over the second "o".

Your figurine was virtually

Your figurine was virtually new when it was purchased, it is not an antique. Similar pieces are still in product. Most retail for over $300.00 when new , but quickly loose their value by the time they hit the secondary market.

Re: Capodimonte porcelain statue of an old man with an oyster...

This figure is certainly way more than 15 years old, at least 50 years - we have the same figure which was bought by my mother before I was born. There are later copies which are nowhere near the quality of these fine Capo di Montes, and sadly, they have brought the value of these pieces down.

Re: Capodimonte porcelain statue of an old man with an oyster...

Very few of this type of Capodimonte figurine predates the 1960's, the vast majority made post 1980. Many of the big name makers were still in operation into the 1990's and beyond. Examples like this one are not antique, but were often sold through Antique /Decorators stores to fill the demand for the then expanding Collectibles market.
