Cedar Hope Chest

Personally I'd leave it the way it is. You can polish it up with some dark paste wax applied with 0000 steel wool. The steel wool will remove minor scratches and polish out dull areas of finish. After rubbing on the dark wax (Minwax make this) with the steel wool just buff the wax, it will leave a nice satin glow to the piece and maintain its original look.

does anyone have a guess?

does anyone have a guess how old this piece is or how much it is worth? I thought it was scratch built but found the B mark on the bottom and the 144 over 121 on the bottom also. So it is number 121 of 144 this seems to indicate a limited amount of original pieces. I was hoping it is rare. I have been looking around and have yet to see another like it (Double Opening Top)

Instappraisal

Hello Karmen,

The point of Instappraisal is for your fellow collectors and experts alike to comment on your request.  The way you get an appraisal is when someone comments about your item.  If there is not expert in your particular item then it may take some time for someone to respond.  Instappraisal is 100% community-driven.  If you have expertise in an item up for an appraisal then you can contribute by putting in your comments on the history, valuation, or anything else that is noteworthy.  Just as a fellow collector could comment on your particular appraisal request with his/her expertise.  That's how Instappraisal works.  Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Sincerely,
Joseph

These chests first made their appearance before world war one, but were made well into the 1940's. Your is loosely based on Arts & Craft pieces made before world war one, but I think it dates from the 1930's. Value wise in the current market-$350.00. Lovejoy
