History
Was my grandmothers first piece of furniture when she moved away from home. (1920's?)
I was just wondering what you have found out about this table. I just bought the same table a few days ago and it's beautiful! There are a few scratches in mine, and two of the legs are cracked, but it's beautiful. I have a tiny condo and wanted a nice dining room table that I could use for multiple guests without taking up much room day to day and it's perfect! I have done some research and found a similar looking but smaller side table by Duncan Phyfe, so I believe you are correct there. Let me know if you found out anything else!
"Duncan Phyfe" was a 19th Century cabinet maker. Throughout the first half of the nineteenth century he made Neoclassical furniture for the social and mercantile elite of New York, Philadelphia, and the American South where he was particularly popular. His name has become used as a generic term for furniture similar to what he originally made, but produced during the 20th century. Most tables like the one pictured generally date from the second quarter of the 20th century and were produced in huge numbers. Most of these 20th century examples we see go at auction these days for under $150.00.
