Description Folding carpet chair. Bottom of chair reads: "Made by Philander Derby Gardner Ma." and "Patented Oct 3.76" Inventor is Frank Parker. Patent # 182850. P. Derby Co. was in business until mid 30's. Would like to narrow down date of manufacture more and would like the approximate value. Thanks a lot!

At the time of the patent date, patents provided design protection for 17 years, meaning just based on that your chair could date from 1876 until 1893, after which the patent marking would no longer be used. Based on the image, the chair is Victorian and probably dates from the 1880's. Value wise, there is not much demand currently for late Victorian Furniture, we see comparable fold chairs selling for under 4100.00 at auction currently. Lovejoy

That should read "selling for under $100.00" not 4100.00 ;~) Lovejoy's coffee has not kicked in yet this AM. Lovejoy

Thank you very much for the information. I never knew that patents were good for that time frame so that's great to learn. I figured it was earlier in Derby's career because later chairs were marked P. Derby & Co. so the 1880's date makes sense. I forgot to put that it also has "No 562" marked on the bottom. Is there any way of finding out how many of these chairs were produced. Thanks for sharing your knowlege. Have a great day.
