Re: Wrought by Martha Southwick, Dublin (Ireland), Age 13, ...

" From the NY Times, Published: October 10, 1982: Another sampler, from the collection of the late Theodore H. Kapnek, the most outstanding collector of the medium, was wrought by Martha Southwick in 1836 and includes as well the name of her town of Dublin, N. H. As Joel Kopp pointed out, this sort of detail quickens the pulse of a collector, since it opens up the possibility of genealogical records. The central image is that of a red brick house. Mr. Kapnek had done his homework and found that Martha's father had indeed built a brick house on Lot 21 in Dublin, so that in all likelihood this was her own home. She had died at the age of 73 following, one presumes, her own good advice: ''Be virtuous if you would be happy.'' This sampler is valued at $4,500."

We have a needlework sampler (not a family heirloom) that we were about to donate to a silent auction. I was going to price it at $150, but then I went on the internet and found that some of these things are worth far more. I think ours is an average example. It was created by Martha Southwick in Dublin, Ireland in 1836. Is there an appraiser nearby? We live in Laurel, MD."

This Martha "Southwick Sampler" also is available in an art print on paper.

So unless you are Cynthia then there is more than 1 out there and they may be copies. You need to see a professional for this because it would be worth a lot if it where authentic. Good luck

Hi there, I have the same sampler and it has been framed. Did she do many of these, or are they reproductions?. Does anyone know?? I thought a sampler was done by a person only one time in their lifetime. I'm really puzzled about this and is it worth anything. Was she from Ireland or New Hampshire? Thanks for all of the info you can give me. Jerri James, Florida

Re: Wrought by Martha Southwick, Dublin (Ireland), Age 13, ...

chances are it's a print , there are several of them out there. If you look at it very closely you can see that that it's not fabric. But they are very good prints and foul alot people.

Nobody will able to tell you much without actually physically examining the piece. These samplers were generally done by young girls to practice sewing skills, the odds of them doing multiples of the same sampler with the same date are slim to nill. This particular one has been reproduced on a grand scale.

I'm not sure I understand your question, but an image of the sample should be at the top of the page.

Did anyone ever get an answer? I have the same sampler. It is evident that there are more than one and different people seem to be doing the sampler.
