Creepy statue Asian maybe??

By doizdump, 8 September, 2009
Description

Carving looks to be a buddha in a tree with a demon on top of it. Very detailed and very creepy looking. I was told by an Asian antique dealer that it was a very rare and soughtafter piece and was worth anywhere from 800-1100$. I just wanted a second opinion.

Re: Creepy statue Asian maybe??

Fascinating item, I looked at Shiva the destroyer, nope, buddha with demons, nope... (I see the sitting posture different) Kali.. nope wrong number of arms as typically depicted.

I don't know, if you do find out come back and tag this so I can know?

It is interesting and you supplied nice photos.

Re: Creepy statue Asian maybe??

There is a buddha and a monkey myth, the facial expression of the demon is consistent with this genre, google images under "monkey demon" "monkey king" and look at the piece. However.. the sitting posture of the lower piece looks feminine.

It's Indonesian, the top figure resembles Barong masks made in Bali

Most of these carvings are made for the tourist market and are not rare.
