WWII, Iwo Jima war snapshots including the flag raising at Iwo Jima, and many graphic depictions of war

By scooter69, 23 October, 2009
Description

I have compared the flag raising photo we have to the original Joe Rosenthal photo and find no differences whatsoever, with the exception of Joe's wider format. There are 34 additional photos in this collection all presumably taken on the same roll of film. I have posted some samples, including a copy of the original Rosenthal pic for comparison, we would appreciate any input as to what we really have here. Many of the pics are too graphic to post, for example a G.I. posed with an enemy's severed head, We have no Idea what they may be worth or of what significance they could be, PLEASE HELP. We will answer all e-mails, I am posting this inquiry for my friend Tony and his wife, thank you in advance, Scott.

Re: WWII, Iwo Jima war snapshots including the flag raising ...

My uncle had some of these photos and he said they belonged to his father (my grandfather). Now seeing some of the exact same ones here I would assume there are multiple copies. However I would be interested to learn any info you have on them. You can email me at [email protected]

Thanks

I do not know about your particlular set, but it was very common in the 1930's-40's and even into the 50's for a person to buy photo sets of famous places or events. I have sold a couple on Ebay (one was Yellowstone Park and the other was Pearl Harbor). Back then families didn't have access to the images of the stories or places they were hearing about, so a person could order picture sets and actually see what they were hearing about.

The inclusion of Joe Rosenthal's photo makes me think that this is likely where these pictures came from.

As far as value, that varies a lot with the subject. A Yellowstone set may only bring $5-10, whereas something more historical significance like yours could bring $100 or more.

a couple of those photos are the same. the one where the guy is ash after the bomb, the flag raising. Then my uncle has the one where the guy is posing with the severed head, and the jeep with the with the missiles shooting up. He also has one with (i believe) general MacArthur in a jeep. And then there are several of nude women and one guy with elephantiasis. (not easily forgotten)
