Description
These chairs are very old looking. They have a sun face at the top and hearts and other carvings in them. I think that they are fertility chairs from a long time ago. Every time a female sits in them, around 3 weeks later, she is pregnant. Don't know much more about them. That is why I am trying to find out more about them. I might consider selling them. There are 2 chairs.
Re: antique dinning chairs
Well I finally found the chairs!
First you don't say what type of wood the chairs are. I can see some grain in the seat but not nearly enough to be sure what it is and that is important.
I assume that there are no marking on the chairs anywhere. in the case a picture (close up) of the underside of the seat could be helpful in dateing it.
You also say that they have been in your family about 30 yrs but not where or how they were aquired.
It is also important to know if the chairs have been refinished which can be known when examining them first hand but not so with a picture.
All that said...I think they are a confused repro.
The heavy carving is Jacobean in apearience and the streacher design is also, but Jacobean chairs never had cabriel legs which the front legs are.I can't really see the full back legs in these pictures but they seem to be more the proper shape for a Jacobean chair.
I suspect that they might be from the 1960's when there was a spate of Spanish decore-- but poping one of them in the car for a trip to a local antique dealer and asking if they would be interested and what they would offer could be your easiest and best bet here. If they don't want it they will likely give you a free opinion on them anyway and you just might get a decient offer. If they do offer you might say you will concider it AFTER asking all you want to know and then further your research before selling. Antique dealers will normally offer 1/2 or less the value as they want to make a profit.
