well you didn't give much info ie what state the auction was may or may not have helped.

I would say the wood is Oak and that it looks original backing. This is probably from some where around 1900 to 1920 maybe a bit before. It looks to me like so much of the oak furniture that was mass produced in new england around that time. But that again is a guess and a place for you to start your research
