Re: Vintage Wrought iron floor lamp w/ punched out tin shade

To be honest, I suspect that this is not a Yellin piece. To be sure, send some photos to [email protected] and ask them to authenticate it.

If you go to www.samuelyellin.com and look at the examples, one notices a few details that raise suspicions. Note the feet. This lamp is simply flattened bars where as SY used ornate balls, feet with toes, etc. When you look at the lamps, you see glass lamps with ornate metalwork, not a punched tin type shade. When you look at the body of his works, it's very ornate throughout. This lamp doesn't have that feature, just a few curls added on here and there.

It could be an early work, but I suspect rather that you are probably looking at a senior student type work of an apprentice blacksmith type person.

I can't say I am an expert in this type of material, I usually work with smaller pieces. It is a very nice lamp, but the photographs of it don't really scream 'High Quality' of a professional doing this type of work regularly.

At a guess, and because there seems to be a limited market for the gothic type look (the piece is quite dark, even illuminated most of the light is blocked) in furniture, I'd suggest that the lamp would sell for between $70 and $200 (depending on where and how sold).

For insurance I'd put a tag of about $300 as it would be a harder piece to find to replace. Insurance values should include hiring someone to replace the item for you.

I'll be interested to see others input on this too, to see if they agree or not.

One thought - because it is inherited - have you considered looking to see if you had any blacksmiths in the family? I do, my brother built a hanging lamp for me similar to this look. You might find that this is a family piece! If so, keep the history with it, it adds interest and value to a piece even for later relatives!

Glenn,
Unless you live near by (Northern Alberta) the shipping to me would be pretty high. Also, as I mentioned, it's not a type of piece I normally collect so selling to me won't get you a high price. Because of that, WITH shipping included, I would only go as high as $60.

If you are going to sell, you would be better off bouncing it off e-bay or a local consignment dealer (antiques not 'smith's junk and things shop'). That is where you would get a better price. Even Kijiji.com would get you a better price locally!

Sorry, but you need to target this type of buyer to get the better price!

It's worth more but I would only be buying on spec for resale, so I'd need to leave room for profit.

Frankly, if you are going to sell, you would be much better off bouncing it off e-bay or a local consignment dealer (antiques not 'smith's junk and things shop'). That is where you would get a better price. Even Kijiji.com would get you a better price locally!

Sorry, but you need to target the market if you want the better sale. Just being honest with you!

Disn, I would pay a total $125 shipped to my home(insured). My zip code is 37075. Id like to buy the lamp for my father, and not resell it. Thanks, Glenn...
