Description

This is a very old Indian doll. I believe that the head is porcelain. It was wrapped in newspaper from 1917 when I discovered it.

Re: Very old Indian doll

Based on your images your doll is what's referred as a "Skookum Style" or "Trading Post" dolls, after original dolls that were mass produced from about the 1920's to the 1960's. While the original Skookum dolls are always wrapped in shawls and have no arms, the copies often have arms, movable limbs and heads that the originals lacked.

The dolls came in a variety of tribal costumes, sold to tourists along with other Native American products such as rugs, blankets, leather work and pottery. Your doll's clothing appears to be Navajo, indicating the doll was likely originally sold in the South Western USA.Values for the unmarked dolls tends to be rather modest, in the current market such dolls made
from the second quarter of the 20th Century sell for under $100.00.

Re: Very old Indian doll

Dolls were often buried in the tombs of the Incan Indians of Peru. They would signify motherhood, crossing the river of death, musical ability and other things.
