Dragon Table Lamp

By stacey.barton@…, 12 August, 2010
Description

This was purchased at "Gable's Department Store" established in 1880. The building this was placed in was built in 1888. This piece has been in the famiy for almost 100 years. I am looking for someone to give an opinion as to how old this really is? I've never seen anything like it. The flowers are illuminated by small bulbs when this is plugged in. It reads "Bologna, Italy" and "Salve" has been painted within a banner on the design.

Re: Dragon Table Lamp

That is awesome, has to be a comission piece, i would say either angel minghetti or caff aggiolo, both did excellent imitations of fine majolica. Are you sure your not seein a set of initials like spqf or spqr rather than the word salve?

Re: Dragon Table Lamp

I am going to research the names you gave me a little more. Thanks for the comments. Have you heard of Valuemystuffnow.com? I used them and paid $6.99 for an unofficial appraisel and I was not happy with their results...I checked those initials again - it definitely says, "Salve." I looked up Salve and I think maybe it just translates into italian?

Re: Dragon Table Lamp

I just googled the name "Angel Minghetti" and low and behold - his signature that looks something like an "A" or an "M" is hidden behind that sticker on the bottom of my piece. What else can you tell me about his work? Is it worth anything?

Re: Dragon Table Lamp

Its worth anything between 800-2000 dollars depending on the day. I would take it to auction if your going to sell it. If it is a rare piece the skys the limit.

Re: Dragon Table Lamp

It certainly is in the style of Angel Minghetti. I've seen a number of pieces attributed with the dragon motif to Angel Minghetti, whose pottery began operations about 1849, but based on markings it's unlikely this piece predates the 1920's. Basic Country of origin marks eg. "Italy" were very seldom used until after 1891, full country of origin marks eg, "Made in Italy" generally postdate the early 1920's.

The Minghetti studio operated into the 1930's, these later pieces tended to be marked with a star and a combined AM underlined.
