Not Sure what the title of the picture is I just call it "Sad"

By sherrie, 12 October, 2010
Description

The picture was given to me as a gift I am not sure where it came from I googled it the name does come up in the computer with writing I don't understand. It is an outline of a lady that looks sad there are a lot of colors in the picture. The picture is on canvas and signed Modigliami 1916 I'm thinking possibily Modigiliani, but I'am not sure it does look like something he might have done.

Re: Not Sure what the title of the piture is I just call it ...

If this is an original painting and truly done by the original artist then what you may have is a Modigliani.  Again, if this is original, authentic, and a painting then this would be extremely valuable.  In this case I would suggest that you use a bona fide in-person and respectable appraisal house to validate such as Southeby's or Christie's.  I would not rely on an online appraisal of any kind because of the potential extreme value this painting can have.

Sherrie,

I agree with the other person's comments below - this looks like it might be an original Modigliani; the style is such that it matches his other works.  This painting could potentially be extremely valuable - I'm talking possibly into the millions of dollars.  Please, please, do not rely on an online appraisal for this as the value may be significant.  This is definitely something that needs to be appraised in person by one of the big appraisal houses, and Christies would be a great place to start.

As an example of how much an original Modigliani painting can sell for check out this article from the New York Times.  This auction was from back in November '06 which fetched $31 million for a Modigliani painting  Best of luck to you.  You may just own a very significant work of art.

I have a poster of this painting that I got at a college in Michigan, and I can't find any title for it either. I've searched many websites and still can't find it. Coming across yours is pretty remarkable and the fact that you have a painting of it is even more so. As mentioned above, I would'nt take someones appraisal online either, I would take it to a reputable dealer and let them have a look at it.   Sam

I think I may also have this painting. It looks a little bit different than yours (coloration of the face), but otherwise is quite similar. The painting came with an old wooden frame (chipped) and with a bit of paint on its edges. In any case, it's an intriguing work!

Re: Not Sure what the title of the piture is I just call it ...

We also have this exact same painting with different shades.  We have had this in our family for over 30+ years.  We purchased this at an estate sale from a wealthy individual who frequently traveled to Europe and overseas quite often.  This is the first time we have seen the painting online and are having troubles also finding any information about it.  Has anyone found any other information about this painting?  I wish we could find out where everyone got their prints from or where they were printed.  I was also wondering if Amedeo Modigliani ever painted the same picture.  Any information anyone has on this photo would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks for your time.

We have this painting too. I looked at Modigliani's work and I, personally, do not think it has the same characteristics. It's probably just a painting that came from a department store back when they sold paintings on nice wood frames instead of picture reprints on cardboard.

Re: Not Sure what the title of the picture is I just call it ...

Im having a hard time understanding why people think this would be a genuine Modgliani. Not to be rude but, all I see is a signature that clearly says "Lee Reynold's". Where's a pic of the Modigliani signature??

Also it doesn't look like his work to me but something vaguely in that style IMHO.
