Clark Bros. cherry roll top desk

By ackerman1@wind…, 3 February, 2011
Description

My father bought it used for his architectural business and then stored it in his basement for 40 years.  When we brought it up out of the basement it fell apart so we had it restored.  The man who restored it estimated that it was circa 1850 and said he had an offer of $5000 for it in 1993.  We recently gave it to our son and would like to give him an idea of what it is worth.

The desk has been kept in the house since restoration and is in excellent shape now.  The wood is beautiful and there are few scratches except for a large one on the roll top from a loose screw at some point.  We think this gives it character but we're not appraisers.

Re: Clark Bros. cherry roll top desk

Roll top desks made their appearance in the last quarter of the 19th Century, but were still a fixture in offices until almost the 1930's. These desks were made predominantly in oak, but examples were also made in walnut, mahogany, maple and birch.

Roll tops have always been popular in the antique market and rose dramatically in value until the late 1990's, value and demand for them since then has declined somewhat. This particular example probably date from 1890, in the current market comparable roll top desks sell in the $2500.00- $3000.00 range.
