I have seen these selling for some big money and read they are becoming very rare. I would love to have a professional opinion of it's worth...

This is crazy! I cant believe someone had it at a garage sale...I hit em up everywhere I go, but never anything of this sorts, good luck, know if it was ever used? Kind of a dumb question, I know, but still....had to ask.

Hi yep it has been used.  The lady that sold it to me said it was used for years to display a body. Then that body was transfered to a cheaper boxor coffin for burial. This made it possible for all to have a classy funeral regaurdless if they were poor or not. Its pretty cool.. I love it!

Let's get past the lady's ''story" and explore what these are. Most of the caskets on the market today were never used, as a used one would be quite unpleasant-smelling. How's the inside and the lining? That will tell you a lot about it. A smaller-sized one is most likely a coffin salesman's sample that has taken some wear over the years from being in storage or used around the house/barn/etc. if it has no padding and lining inside it was used as a box for storing tools or whatnot. Value varies depending on inside and outside condition. A nice one with expensive inside lining would go for around $600. If there's no lining inside or it is damaged, around $300.

There is a specialist market for coffins amoung collectors of mortuary tools and paraphrenalia,  but they are a hard sell in the General Antique market.

Many funeral homes charge premiums for services that are both unjustified and unethical. This article written by an actual funeral director gives the inside word on what is necessary and what you should be paying for services.
