oil painting portrait wanting more info PLEASE

By larlieb, 13 September, 2011
Description

Hello, I have an oil painting , a portrait of an old man is what we call it, that no one wanted. It belonged to my granfather in law and his family hated it and wanted to get take it to good will. I asked for as I have always loved the painting. Ive got  restored as I wanted to put it up on display.  The art man says its around 18th century, the person who painted it was very skillfull, and it may be a portrait of a christian monk .I have no idea what the signature says, he told me to get someone specialising in signatures to make it out. I don't know anything about where my gf in law aquired it. Only that he is from Ireland, moved to uk then to australia. That is all the info I have. I am not sure weather I need to get insured. I don't want to sell it but I would love infomation on who or what the portrait is of and an idea of the artist. Any Info on it would be great, it always gets us wondering trying to figure out this old man. thankyou for you time. kind regards :) PS ive photoshoped the contrast of the signature to make it brighter and easier to read

Re: oil painting portrait wanting more info PLEASE

It's not 18th century, in fact the style of it and the number below the signature "76" indicates it likely dates to 1976. That said, nobody can appraisal oil paintings from images, to really find much out youmneed to have a Fine Arts Appraiser examine it, and chances are very good the fee required will exceed the value of the painting ;~)
