This is a hand carved lion face chair back....My mother did the seat some 60 years ago...I seem to remember her telling me that it was carved by my great grandfather which would put it circa 1875???

Placed response in twitter 2 days ago, heres a follow -up. blacKforest carving dated from 18thc onward and originated fron Switzerland and Germany its a a formal wooden chair witha highback and a hard seat could be found in hall or common room of grandhouses. They are mostly made in Mahogany or Oaks.With the back carved in classical motif or crest or coat of arm of thefamily who commissioned them. I will placed estimate at ££££-£££££..

Sorry to say your chair is a mass produced example and actually dates from the turn of the 19th century. Similar chairs were made into the 1920's, the originals this chair copies date back to the Renaissance and actually were folding chairs.

i don't quite agree with your comment on the above item. 'cos its contradictory to what the owner says and your comment. 19th century its 1800-1899. the owner grandmother had the chair made or commission in 1875. which agrees with the period you claim such chair were commission. So its not a 20th or 21th C production.

I've been involved in the antique business for over 40 years and based on that experience these chairs were made in the way and manner I reported. They tend to date from the thrid quarter of the 19th century, but production continued into the 20th century.
