Description
This painting was passed down to me from my great grandmother. I believe this is a German painting, and allegedly it is of Hitler's backyard, though I am skeptical that that is hearsay.
Note that there is writing on the back of the canvas, but it is extremely faint and nearly impossible to read, though the last word appears to be "Kaiser"?
I would like to ask if you have ever heard of the artist and if I should seek out an appraiser to valuate the painting. If you can give me a rough estimate on the valuation, I would appreciate that, but if not, I would just like to know whether you think I should go ahead and have it appraised.
Cheers!
Re: German Painting
hi there fellow member...
New to this site, so please bear with me...I recognized your painting the minute I saw it and signed up to assist you....First, we will discount the theory of Hitler's backyard as the setting of this painting..I cannot confirm such a thing and so we will go with the hearsay theory on that one...I can tell you the artist name/signature is not Kaiser, but rather it is the signature of the german painter E.Klinkner.
(E. K-l-i-n-k-n-e-r)... If you look before the signature of the artist's last name on your painting, you will find the capital letter E. which was not mentioned in your identity... From what I know this is a German oil on canvas painting, painted with a thick medium oil imposto. Both the artist and the painting are said to be of German origins..hence the painting is of a "German Alpine Landscape", in which the artist's painting style is based on " Realism", where in this case the subject matter of the painting is: "Landscapes", as opposed to the Cityscapes subject . I have found through my search of the artist's name, there are similiar paintings, by the artist, such as yours..out there...most for sale online...2 in Germany...1 in England..hence the European origins of the painting..yours appears to be of the same landscape, but somewhat different... meaning: it looks like your landscape painting, painted by the same artist , E. Klinkner, but painted from a different focal point or view of the same landscape..the other paintings viewed, have the same distinctive long house or building with the painted white front, and grey strokes of oil paint on top to mimic it's roof, complete with the artist's same signature...but painted from a different perspective viewpoint of the painter's eye on the same landscape. Cannot give you a exact or definitive date on the painting, but other owners have purported the same landsacpe paintings of E. Klinkner, such as yours, to be "circa 1900", with others indicating, "mid 20th century" which could simply be the span of the era of the artist's life. Without any currency conversion sites available to me, I can only describe the value of the paintings the other owners are "asking" for their similiar landscape painting to yours... in Britian, i found one of Klinkner's painting, same landscape as yours, for sale at 365 (GBP) (England"s currency is pounds) which = approx. $570.00USD and in Germany the "asking price" is around 300 German Marks (DEM) ..however, the German Mark (DEM) has been obsolete since January 1, 1999 and replaced with the EURO... when converting the latter to a USD amount, which = $369.00USD. Any online currency conversion chart can assist you with these and other asking prices for the artist's painting...or if you care to insure your painting, should you decide to keep it. I am hoping I have given you a starting point to further research your painting and it's origins....Given you indeed have online access, you will find that if you start with the artist's name: "E. Klinkner", you will find a plethora of online art sites with not only the examples I have given, but perhaps with a more conclusive set of facts about the artist and his paintings...best of luck..enjoy surfing.............til-art-do-us-part:)
