Description
This is an amazing 28" root carving. i believe it depicts a Buddhist monk participating in a pratice known as Shugendo, where ritualistic starvation is involved. You can visit temples in Japan where they house these mummies. Correct me if you think I am wrong.
Re: Amazing 28" Antique Root Carving
I think it is Prince Siddhartha who is Buddah.
Re: Amazing 28" Antique Root Carving
.Thank you for the help, Prince Sidhartha did wander the wilderness in dispair over man's wicked ways and became emaciated from his saddness. You may be right. It's just that this root carving looks like what I have seen from Japan. Thank's again; Greg
Re: Amazing 28" Antique Root Carving
As Kathy mentioned it may possibly be Siddhartha though I've never seen him portrayed as so skinny. Perhaps though that is him under the Bodhi tree of enlightenment. I've seen many root carvings and have never seen this one so it is probably a very unique one-of-a-kind.
Re: Amazing 28" Antique Root Carving
Thank you so much! The reference to Siddhartha under the tree of enlightenment seems to make this theory even more real. This would mean that the caving originated out of India I presume. I still struggle with this because root carvings of this nature and quality more often origanated out of Japan. I do now question my theory that this is a Japanese Buddhist monk practicing Shugendo - Sokushinbutsu. Thans again for the "enlightenment".
