Chippendale Chairs falling apart

By Germis, 20 September, 2012
Description

Twenty years ago, I purchased 6 of Chippendale chairs at a garage sale.  A few of them began falling apart so I put them in storage.

I've decided to fix them and noticed that there's some writing in black marker where the chair back meets the seat. It appears to be European writing, as the 7 has the line crossed, and the 9 is written differently than we in the USA write 9's.

It's hard to see, but it appears to read s.25 985 PW H.24 on one chair

The other chair reads s25 997 px a8.

4 of the chairs are in great condition, two need to be repaired. The seats have been reupholstered several times that I know about. They have ball and claw feet in the front and a shell design on the top.

There are round metal flathead screws on that hold the chairs together.

I'd love to hear if anyone thinks these are old or have any value.

Thanks so much!

Re: Chippendale Chairs falling apart

These are good quality reproductions of Chippendale chairs, we used to call these "Centennials" because they were first made after the Centennial of the Delaration of Independance in 1876. During the period there was an increased demand for original Colonial period  furniture which spured manufacturers to produce reproductions. Cahirs like these though generally date from the first quarter of the 20th century. We retail comparable chairs, but in restored condtion for about $250.00 each.
