"The Gallery of Masterpieces" art collection in wooden case

By sam7878, 24 November, 2012
Description

I inherited a wooden case full of black and white reproductions. The title page reads: The Gallery of Masterpieces / A collection of reproductions in photo-mezzotint from the finest works of the most famous painters down to the year 1800. / New York / Doubleday, Page & Co.

The table of contents page reads: "The fiftly famous pictures comprising the Gallery of Masterpieces" which further lists the artists and titles, including Jean Baptist, Filippino Lipi, Rembrandt, Rubens, Velasquez, etc....

Each reproduction comes with a description page as well. pages are not bound.

The paper measures 15x20" and is in pretty good condition, just slight yellowing, some corners/edges are more yellowed and worn than others. The wooden box that contains the reproductions has a latch that still works, hinges that are in good shape. The wood on the inside is in much better shape than the outside of the case. The outside is scratched and weathered, in general less pristine looking than the inside.

I would like to know the value of such a piece and when it was made. I cannot find a printing or published date anywhere.

Was estimated at $150-250 and sold for $30, just goes to show how auctions can go.
