1850's White Oak Bookkeeper's Standing Desk

By ddfahlbeck, 9 May, 2013
Description

I have what I believe to be is an 1850's white oak single standing bookeeper's desk.  It is 6' wide and 56" tall (includes the rack).  The height from the floor to the desk top is 43".  This desk was purchased 30 years ago at an auction.  There are no names or stamps anywhere to tell who the maker is.  There is a metal plate that is mounted under the rack, but the center plate is apparently missing.  Two of the drawer bottoms are missing but it is a very solid piece. There are 3 drawers on the desk top.  The middle one has a lock but we do not have a key.  There are 5 drawers on both sides of the desk. Total of 13 drawers in all.  During research I found a picture of what appears to be this desk in an ad from Stephen Smith's Desk Warehouse in Boston, MA for the year 1854.  Would love to know any informaion on this desk and what it might be worth.

Re: 1850's White Oak Bookkeeper's Standing Desk

If it's oak it's unlikely it dates from the 1850's, the vast majority of desks from that period were walnut or mahogany. This one has elements of the late Eastlake style, circa the late 1880's, but compaqrable desks were made right up to the turn opf the 19th century. We'd retail a desk like this one in the $800-1200.00 range.

Is this item still available?  Where is it located (so I can estimate shipping).
