Hand painted nippon tea set

By Ljiljana, 8 February, 2010
Description

I have to apologize to you for a really bad picture.
I found this tea set in Goodwill store, and still thinking if I should buy it or not. The tea pot and sugar bowl are missing the lid. It is priced at $100. Every piece is marked as hand painted Nippon.
Cups and saucers are in very good condition, there are five of them.
I would appreciate anything that you could tell me about this set, and I thank you for your help.

Re: Hand painted nippon tea set

It's very hard to say from this picture alone.  Without being able to see the mark, it's not possible to verify authenticity or to know the age. Also it's hard to tell how much if any moriage work is on the pattern.  Condition is also very important in value

Just know that missing lids devalues by quite a bit.  The more moriage work the more valuable. Decorative pieces have more ornate work than serving pieces usually and are therefore more valuable. Also, they tend to have less wear. Check for chips and loss of gold. The more that the gold has worn off the less it is valued.

More gold = more value

More detail = more value

more raised work (moriage) = more value

wear and damage = decreased value
