Antique Cornucopia

By gsoutter, 18 February, 2015
Description

My great aunt immigrated from Ireland in the early 1900s, and went on to work as a domestic for a wealthy family in New York City. She acquired this cornucopia from them sometime in the 1950s. I was told that the piece was old then.

As she grew older in years, she packaged it up, and sent it to a distant relative with written instructions to deliver to me when I was married (I was a child at the time).

I received this package shortly after my wedding in 1992, with this back-story included in a hand-written note. I was encouraged by her to get it appraised, but never did.

The glass itself looks very imperfect when examined closely; almost "wavy" with imperfections contained within the glass. It is decorated with hand-painted flowers outlined with what appears to be gold-leaf. It stands approximately 18".

I am very curious to learn anything about this cornucopia vase that I can. Thanks for any help!

Re: Antique Cornucopia

If the piece was old by the time she aquired it in the 50s, the style plus my instincts tell me that this is a piece of 1880's art glass. Without knowing the artist or manufacturer, I'd have to ball-park it between $100-$300 at retail.
