Brass Mystery T Shaped Object

By schnaps, 6 March, 2014
Description

P { margin-bottom: 0.08in; }

This item appears to be brass and is hollow and fairly thin.  We're wondering if this may have been a garden tool of some sort.  Our daughter thought it may have been a wine cork extractor but it probably is not rugged enough for that.

If this item is recognizable by anyone we'd sure like to know what it is and what it was used for.

Thanks,

Schnaps

Re: Brass Mystery T Shaped Object

The design of it tells you much of its function, if not its precise use.

The T design shows that a person holds onto the top and pushes the bottom into something, obviously something soft. If it is a garden tool, when you push it in, the dirt would compact and become tube shaped. I assume the middle depression area is either for the tube shaped dirt to come out of, or for someone to push any dirt stuck in it out the bottom.

It clearly cannot be a wine cork extractor. With this design the metal piece would have to go between the cork and the inside of the bottle, and there'd be no room for a tool like this. Not to mention originally wine bottles had wax sealing the cork in.

I don't know much about this item. But am exceptionally good at figuring things out logically. Considering this item, I'd say just go ahead and stick it in some dirt and see what happens. The cheapness of its design indicates as well a tool for the garden. I also notice a hole in it that appears to be caused by rust. Brass does not rust. Put a magnet to it. If it sticks, it is not brass. The coloration though is more like copper.
