Antique Chair with caning on back and leather upholstered seat

By Brenda Quick, 14 December, 2015
Description

I have a set of 5 chairs that were passed down to my husband from his father's side of the family.  They are at least pre-1970 as they were antiques when my husband was a child.  One of his aunt's had them and I am wondering what they may be worth.  As a side note, there used to be 6 but he broke one when he was 12 and it seems that it was discarded.

I don't know if they originally had caning on the seat as well as the back since it looks like they were refinished.  Any ideas as to the age and condition of the chairs would be welcome.  We found these in the attic of the old farm house.

Thank you for your help.

Re: Antique Chair with caning on back and leather upholstered...

Chairs like this tend to date 1900-1935, they look older because they were designed to resemble American Colonial furniture, in this case after Queen Anne Style furniture originall made during the early 1700's. In the rough and in need of refinishing they have modest values, at auction comparable chairs often sell for $25.00 each.

Thank you very much for your reply.  That was what I thought but always good to get someone else's opinion.
