Hello,
I'm really new to collecting persian and oriental rugs. Please look at the full hi-rez collection of photos of my rug here at a page I put up for appraisers to look at it because of all the photo limitations on appraisal sites.
So please view the full gallery of this rug's photos at my page in a hi-rez slide show here: http://carefulwords.com
Basics about the rug:
- Size 6ft X 4.1ft
- Medium - Pure Silk
- Style - Abbasi (Qum?)
- A nice touch to this rug is the woven-in style-incorporated inscription at the top of the rug translates from Farsi to: "Abbasi Iran" - the inscription is beutifully incorporated into the rug's design. The intensity of the red is not done justice by photos, being that it's impossible to get a perfect photo of a oure silk rug no matter what kind of lighting you use.
- A tag (auction tag? estate sale tag? appraisal tag?) affixed to the back of the rug reads:
"104136 6X4.1
C.JM D/S PURE SILK
VALUE: $17600.00"
- Unknown provenance
- Purchased through an online ad from a private, unknown seller.
- I did a "silk burn test" to check that it was indeed real silk and not artificial silk. I'm told this is a
definitive test of real silk? It passes by smelling of burnt hair when flame is held to it. The flame
goes out when the lighter flame is removed. The burnt silk remains in shape as a black, crispy
ash. I'm told that if a strand of artificial silk has a flame held to it, it will continue to burn, smell of
burning plastic, and will produce a white/gray ash.
I hope someone can tell me what this rug could expect to sell for at auction in a ballpark figure? And also looking for any information anyone is able to share with me about this rug and particular style. Thank you so very much!
Re: (Antique?) Pure Silk Persian Abbasi Rug
An update on this rug....
I just found out that this rug is probably a Qum persian silk rug? I'm confused because as seen in one of the photos above, you can see the woven-in black box containing the Farsi words, translated saying "Abbasi Iran". It has the central Abbasi style medalion... I'm happy for it to be either.
Would love for others to chime-in on this! :)
Thanks all!
Steve
