antique Korean Chinoiserie black lacquer chest

By Lalohi703, 30 September, 2016
Description

This antique Korean Chinoiserie black lacquer chest with oversized mirror is stunning and rare.

Thickly inlaid with carved mother of pearl in the fantastic shapes of birds, buildings, flowers, foliage, lotus blossoms, borders, trees and more. Some of the inlay is slightly raised, and some of it is more raised, creating a fascinating topical texture to add to the visual texture.  This piece is literally encrusted with 1000s of pieces of the hand carved mother-of-pearl .

Re: antique Korean Chinoiserie black lacquer chest

Some furniture like this can date to the 1920's, but most furniture like this with mother of pearl and hardstone inlay tends to post date World War Two ( 1945). Much of it sent back by troops and sailors stationed in Korea during the Korean War . Similar mother of pearl furniture is still in production in Korea, China and South East Asia. At auction comparable pieces often go for $1000.00+
