20 years ago we were on a mountainside in Worley, Idaho bottle digging. Came across what appeared to be the top of a cage or something. We continued to dig every Saturday for a month straight until we pulled this AWESOME, old bird cage out of the ground!! It stands 70 inches tall from ground to tip top. Cage is 52 inches with 18 inch stand. 30 inch diameter. This cage is huge and built EXTREMELY tough. It isn't ur typical "ornate wrought iron." It is thick, heavy duty iron. No rust. All bars are intact, nothing missing. Original EVERYTHING, even lock on door is original. Cage is in 4 pieces-- stand, bottom piece (with removable tray), middle cage piece and chandelier dome top. Cage can be hung also. The basketball in cage is to show size as with the 33 gallon garbage can I have placed next to it. I have spent HOURS and HOURS online trying to find this exact cage and can't. I want to sell it and was gonna ask $300 for it but was told I was ripping myself off. I really appreciate any info anybody can give me. Thank u much!!

Re: Old huge steel birdcage
I was just wondering if you got any replies for this? And how long you've had it posted? Because my mom is trying to sale a similar one, and she was going to ask around the same amount as you were. But I did find one online that looks EXACTLY like hers, and it was selling for $1800. It was from 1870 though, and I have no idea what year hers in from. I ONLY know that it's at least 50 years old, because that's when she got it. BUT she bought it from an older lady, so it could be over 100 years old, too. Maybe even more, since it looks exactly like the one I found online. But, I can't found any information on how to get it apprasised. :-(
Re: Old huge steel birdcage
Hello! I never got any info back on it. I wish I would have. I ended up selling mine locally for $300 to a gentleman who loved it as much as I did. From all the research I did online, I think it was worth much more than $300. But it's really only worth what someone will pay for it and I posted it a number of different places and the highest offer I got happened to be from the local classifieds from our tiny town. So I sold it. I wish I could help u more. I hated to let mine go. But I hated packing it around even more. That thing was extremely heavy!! I hope ur able to find out more on yours. And even more, I hope u find somebody that makes u an offer closer to what it's worth. Just gotta find the right person who needs and wants something like that. And the pickens are slim!!! Good luck!!
Re: Old huge steel birdcage
Thanks so much for the quick reply. I was afraid this site let you down. That's a bummer. I guess I might end up having to pay for an appraisal. Oh, and I just noticed that I had a typo in that price I posted. The one I found which looks exactly like my mom's, is priced at $4800. Exact same size, decorations, and all. The only thing different, is my moms legs are bigger, and decorated, making it even nicer looking then the $4800 cage, so I would just die if she sales it for $300 and finds out that it's worth 4 or 5 thosand dollars. Ugh... Here's what hers looks like. https://www.1stdibs.com/furniture/more-furniture-collectibles/bird-cages/american-wrought-iron-bird-cage-perch-circa-1870/id-f_1216868/ Only difference is that hers isn't all cleaned up like this one is. But I guess you could just paint it, which is probably what they did with that one. LOL Â
Re: Old huge steel birdcage
Large cages like this tend to be used for large parrots or for multiple smaller birds such a finches. values for themvary a great deal, some are custom made designer pieces and if marked do sell at a premium. Large examples rarely sell for less than $400.00 at auction, more elaborate examples at $1500.00.
Re: Old huge steel birdcage
Thanks so much Lovejoy. That helps a lot. My mom had a Cockatoo in hers. And it was plenty big enough. I can't find an appraisal place close to my parents house though, so that's why I was looking online. This site did have a map though, and I found one about 30 miles from their house, so I guess I'll take it there. I have no idea how much a place charges for appraisals, but I'm sure it will be worth it, as it seems very old, and I think it's might be worth quite a bit.Â
