Metal Bat

By Oceans, 14 November, 2013
Description

I think this is made of iron, but not sure.

This was owned by an elderly man who I think was from Poland. He told his wife that "in the old country people would make and hang these over their doorways to keep out illness and negative energy. He left it to me when he pased away in 1999. I have never been able to find any info abiut it. I listed under folk art because I was not sure where it fits.

Re: Metal Bat

My in-laws are Polish & Russian & believe this is probably Russian. There seems to be a tradition to place a bat at the entrance to denounce evil entering their home. The reason for the bat & not a religious symbol; the bat is believed to harness the spirit of a loved one who's passed in the home.

Not sure of the accuracy however that is what I found out.

Re: Metal Bat

Thansk for finding that out for me.  Search as I might, I have never been able to find out anything at all.  Is this still done or did the practice die out with a past generation? The man that left it to me died in his eighties but I got the impression that is was much older than him.

Re: Metal Bat

An older suuperstition definitly. I would assume, this object to be at the least, one hundred years old. I can't see any welds on the metal soo possibly 19 century. If you have an idea for the price please allow me the oppertunity to perchase it. My interest in the bat is to gift it to my sister as she loves bats & would give this one lots of love.
