Re: Herkimer NY Roll Top Desk

I am researching for a friend on a desk almost exactly like this one but with about 3 times the amount of drawers in the top.  Unfortunately it has the metal that identifies it as a Standard desk but without the actual lock still there.

Re: Herkimer NY Roll Top Desk

Demand peaked for roll top desks back in the late 1980's, along with the massive trend for Victorian furniture and decorating. Since that time though demand for pieces like this have been in great decline. At auction most comparable oak roll tops now sell in the $300.00- $600.00 range.

Re: Herkimer NY Roll Top Desk

Yes I have one myself, that unfortunately before my mother bought it the whole lock assembly was taken out. So the value is basically nothing but the quality of the desk. But it is so sad that the kids now would much rather have this pressed wood or plastic throw away furniture then the higher well put together with pride furniture that will last 2 or 3 hundred years. Since so many of it has already last more then 100 years already. Plus the insult to their ancesters that did take the pride in their work as well.
