pottery basket maybe African?

this is a basket made of pottery that is dark brown and the handle is covered with string of some sort and a cover is on the basket of an artistically macreme type design in a string. I do not know its age and there are no markings of any kind on the bowl.  It came to me in an auction lot and there were many Baule African masks and so I thought it may be African but I do not know.
