Arts & Crafts Old Oak Chair with side table

By ravengray, 11 August, 2020
Description

We inherited this chair and the little side table with our 1920s cabin in Northern California, and I'm wondering what it might be worth. What do the spade designs mean?

It's oak for sure, and looks to have been re-upholstered at some point (a couple of brass rivets are missing). The chair has no nails that I can see, but only dowel type construction.

Re: Arts & Crafts Old Oak Chair with side table

Values for these Mission/Arts & Crafts vary considerably by the maker, those marked examples by the big name maker's being the most sought after. Unmarked examples like this one tend to be of the mass produced variety made in and around Grand Rapids Michigan prior to WW1. The pair would probably go $350.00 at auction.

Re: Arts & Crafts Old Oak Chair with side table

thanks for your comment - mass-produced but handmade? This furniture has been in this log cabin for a long time (our cabin dates to the 1920s) and our home is rural but only an hour north of San Francisco, so it's mostly likely the furniture came from the SF Bay Area, and not Grand Rapids Michigan.
