Antique Daybed

By avanderwall, 8 September, 2020
Description

Help!! LOL!! I have no idea what this bed is! I have talked to one person that thinks it might be an Indonesian Daybed, but that was just a guess. I'm not sure where to even start with it. Everything looks hand carved, and almost all of it seems to be put together with dowels, with the exception of the actual bed rails. I know its not in the greatest condition and needs lots of love, but would really like to find out what it is, how old it is and what a realistic price I could get out of it would be. It is missing one of the pillars that hold up the canopy, and the long side of the bed has the top part of the carving broken off. The canopy also has a few missing pieces, as seen in the pics.I would be grateful for any information that could be supplied...and yes, it is for sale!

Re: Antique Daybed

Does your bed have any markings or signatures anywhere on it? I assume not or you would have posted, but just making sure.

Re: Antique Daybed

It's not European or North American, it's as you were told, likely Indonesian. Most of these have been imported in recent years in container loads of antiques from the far east. They were designed after European examples by native craftsmen, often made to order for European businessmen and land owners during the 19th Century.

Re: Antique Daybed

Thanks for the response. Would it be safe to guess that it is made from Teak or would something else be more popular?
