Re: Steamer trunk

Flatter topped “Steamer Trunks” like this generally date from 1890 onward, they are transitional examples between the dome top and flat topped trunks. Many of them will have patent dates on the locks which will give a general idea of vintage within about a time frame of about 15 years. They were called "Steamer trunks" because they were often most used on ocean trips on steam ships, their flat tops allowing them to be stacked one on top of the other. The sizes of them vary considerably, values for them vary by maker, size and condition, with those by famous makers such as Louis Vuitton being worth thousands, but most like this one are Generic examples and sell for a great deal less, quite often for less than $75.00 at auction. With examples by big name makers such as Louis Vuitton it's best to leave any restoration up to the Experts. Those of a more mass produced nature, like this one, can be cleaned up with standard metal polishes, fabric and leather polishes. Having such work done professionally though is not cost effective, as it can exceed the cost of an original in very good condition.
