Antique Canteen (1668?)

By HristoMinkov, 11 October, 2021
Description

My guess is that if it is authentic, that it was made in 1668 and from Russia. Below are pictures from each side. Can anyone give me a proper valuation?

Re: Antique Canteen (1668?)

I can’t find any canteens or flasks shaped like this. The one thing that seems odd is the date looks like it was added recently as there is no patina. Did you get this from the Ukraine? I ask because I see lots of antiques and vintage (usually military related) from the Ukraine on eBay and I always wonder about them. I have no idea of value but do think the date was added at a later time and wonder why.

Re: Antique Canteen (1668?)

That’s good to have that info. In the photo the date looks as though it has less age than the rest so that made me wonder. I guess family history is the best way to try and trace it’s origins, maybe one of the ancestry sites would could help.
Not finding any great info yet but will add two links to vaguely similar objects. https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/imperial-russian-double-headed-e…

And another thought about yours (just a guess). It feels like folk art to me. Like maybe a soldier made it for himself, trench art.
Any idea what the metal is?

Re: Antique Canteen (1668?)

i've asked my mother about him and all I know is that he used to collect antiques as a hobby, guns, swords, jewelry, anything he could get his hands on, so I think it might be authentic as most of the other stuff are

i'll try and get it checked at an antique house tomorrow

Re: Antique Canteen (1668?)

Looks too small to be a canteen, possibly it's a gunpowder flask.
