Walrus Tusk Cribbage Board/Scrimshaw carving

By orodreth3, 30 March, 2015
Description

I have a hand carved cribbage board/scrimshaw carving made by Captain George Comer in 1905. Captain Comer was one of the most famous whalers of his day as well as being an explorer and a expert on Inuit culture. Found this piece in a pawn shop in Rhode Island.

History
Captain George Comer made this cribbage board from a walrus tusk during the winter of 1905. Iced in from mid-September to May, Arctic whalemen had plenty of time to play games like cribbage, or to exercise their creativity in crafts like scrimshaw. Comer's relief carving shows his schooner Era approaching port, which he hoped to be doing at the end of the 1905 season.

not that old

Not hand carved in 1905, I have the exact same one I bought new at the Navy exchange in 1980 in Groton. Cool board, real ivory (not the feet), still not 1905
