Avon Kosta Boda barware?

Description

I came across this glassware set in an auction lot and struggled to find information on them. They were simply stored in a box labeled “Swedish glass” and all wrapped in newspaper from the 80s. I finally landed on Avon Kosta-Boda glassware but there are no noticeable markings anywhere on my glasses. They have no “seam” lines (making me think they were hand blown) and there are a few imperfections among the set of 44. I’m struggling to find any information on how to confirm these as Avon Kosta Boda glasses and also figuring out a price point for resale.

Appraisal Report

Item Description

  • Category: Glassware and Crystal
  • Medium: Glass
  • Distinguishing Marks:
    • Tear-drop air bubble in the bulb of the stem.
    • No noticeable manufacturer markings or signatures.
    • Appears hand-blown due to the absence of seam lines and slight imperfections among the set.
  • Condition: Good condition with minor imperfections consistent with handmade glass.
  • Quantity: 44 pieces
  • Date Period: Unknown (newspaper wrapping suggests the 1980s or earlier).

Historical Context

The glassware resembles designs attributed to Kosta Boda, a renowned Swedish glass company, particularly their collaboration with Avon in the mid-20th century. Kosta Boda often produced high-quality hand-blown glass featuring distinctive air bubble accents, a hallmark of Scandinavian glass design. While Avon marketed some glassware under their brand, actual production was frequently outsourced to esteemed manufacturers like Kosta Boda.

The absence of identifiable marks complicates confirmation of origin. However, the bubble design, craftsmanship, and association with Swedish glass tradition align with mid-century Scandinavian aesthetics, suggesting potential provenance from Kosta Boda or a similar high-quality Swedish producer.

Comparable Items

  • Similar glassware sets from Kosta Boda featuring tear-drop bubbles in the stem have been appraised and sold between $20–$60 per piece, depending on condition, rarity, and confirmation of authenticity.
  • Avon-Kosta Boda collaborations typically fetch $15–$40 per piece if confirmed as such.

Valuation

Given the uncertainty about definitive markings:

  1. As a generic handmade Swedish glass set:
    • Value: $10–$20 per glass
    • Set Value (44 pieces): $440–$880
  2. If confirmed as Avon-Kosta Boda:
    • Value: $15–$40 per glass
    • Set Value (44 pieces): $660–$1,760

Recommendation

To maximize resale value:

  1. Research further to confirm the maker (contact experts, post to glass collector forums, or compare with marked Kosta Boda pieces).
  2. Emphasize the hand-blown craftsmanship and Swedish glass heritage in your listing.
  3. Sell individually or in small sets (e.g., sets of 4 or 6) to appeal to collectors and maximize returns.

Please let me know if you need help finding resources to authenticate the pieces!
