Moroccan Brass Table

Appraisal Report

Item Description

  • Category: Furniture
  • Style: Mid-Century Moroccan
  • Material:
    • Tabletop: Brass, etched with intricate designs, characteristic of Moroccan artistry.
    • Base: Folding wooden "spider" legs.
  • Condition: Good (some visible wear on the wood frame; brass shows patina consistent with age, which adds to its charm).
  • Dimensions: Not specified, but typically these tables are 18–20 inches tall with a tabletop diameter of 24–30 inches.

Historical Context

These brass tables with folding "spider" legs gained popularity during the mid-20th century as part of the Moroccan decor trend, influenced by global travel and fascination with exotic styles. They were often handmade in Morocco and imported to Europe and America.

The brass tabletop showcases traditional Islamic geometric patterns or floral designs, hand-etched, making each piece unique. The folding wooden legs allow for easy storage and transport, a practical feature that contributed to their popularity.

Market Trends

  • Moroccan brass tables are desirable among collectors of mid-century and bohemian decor.
  • The value depends on the craftsmanship, condition, and size of the table. The patina on the brass is often seen as an attractive feature that enhances its vintage appeal.
  • Comparable tables have sold in the range of $150–$600, with higher prices for larger or finely detailed pieces.

Current Value

  • Retail Value: $250–$400
  • Auction Value (Realized): $200–$300
  • Private Sale Value: $250–$350

Recommendations for Sale

  1. Highlight Features: Emphasize the handcrafted brass etching and the convenience of the folding spider-leg design.
  2. Clean Gently: Leave the patina intact, as many buyers prefer the aged look. If polishing, do so minimally to retain authenticity.
  3. Photograph Well: Capture the details of the brass etching and the full table, including the folding mechanism.
  4. Target Audience: Market to collectors of mid-century, Moroccan, or bohemian-style furniture.
