Description

My mother and father have had this desk and corner side table for quite some time. They were given to them from a customer of my fathers many years ago for work he had done on there house. It has always been in there spare room as a decorative piece. It’s in very very good condition. It shows some age but nothing that takes away from the beauty of both pieces. My father has past away and unfortunately my mom needs to sell some of her things in order to pay some medical bills.

I have tried to find anything showing a mark indicating the year or where and who it was made by and from but unfortunately was not able to locate anything.

Appraisal for Inlaid Desk and Corner Side Table

Description

This desk and corner side table are beautifully crafted furniture pieces featuring intricate inlay work. The combination of delicate floral and scroll inlays suggests an emphasis on elegance and detailed craftsmanship.

  1. Desk:
    • Design: Drop-front desk with ornate inlay work on both exterior and interior surfaces, likely made using various wood veneers such as walnut, maple, or rosewood. The curved cabriole legs and inlay patterns suggest inspiration from 18th-century European styles, particularly French or Italian Rococo or Neoclassical furniture.
    • Interior Details: Small drawers with brass pulls and an intricately decorated writing surface highlight functionality combined with artistry.
  2. Corner Side Table:
    • Design: A triangular table with a lower shelf, also adorned with inlays that match the desk's decorative style.
    • Craftsmanship: Similar floral motifs and fine marquetry work, suggesting the same origin or workshop as the desk.

Historical Context

The inlay techniques and overall style are reminiscent of 18th- to early 19th-century furniture, specifically European designs. The marquetry and detailed motifs could indicate influences from Italy, where such designs flourished, or France, known for its ornate furniture during the Rococo and early Neoclassical periods.

While you mentioned the pieces might be from the late 1700s, without visible maker’s marks or provenance, it’s challenging to confirm their exact period. They could be 20th-century reproductions made in the style of older European furniture, which was common among skilled furniture makers catering to the growing market for antiques and replicas.

Condition

Both pieces appear to be in good condition, with signs of age consistent with their use and historical value:

  • Strengths: The inlay work is intact, and the structural integrity is preserved. Brass hardware is original and complete.
  • Weaknesses: Some wear and scratches are visible, and the back panel of the desk shows signs of age and minor damage. These do not detract significantly from the overall appeal.

Current Market Value

The value of these pieces is influenced by their craftsmanship, condition, and market trends for antique or vintage furniture.

  • Desk: $1,500–$2,500 USD
(If confirmed as an original late 18th- or early 19th-century piece, its value could rise significantly, exceeding $5,000.)
  • Corner Side Table: $700–$1,200 USD
(The standalone value is lower than the desk but complements it as part of a set.)

Factors Affecting Value

  1. Provenance: If you can establish a documented history (e.g., from the previous owners or appraisals), the value could increase.
  2. Restoration Needs: While minimal, professional cleaning or restoration might enhance appeal and marketability.
  3. Demand: Ornate inlaid furniture is sought after, particularly in markets specializing in European antiques.

Suggestions for Sale

  • Auction Houses: Consider reaching out to auction houses specializing in antique furniture to appraise and list the items. Their expertise in European antiques might draw higher bids.
  • Online Platforms: Use platforms like 1stDibs, Chairish, or eBay, ensuring high-quality photos and detailed descriptions.
  • Local Antique Dealers: They may provide a quick sale, but at a slightly lower price point than direct buyers.

Care Instructions

To preserve their condition:

  1. Dust regularly with a soft cloth to avoid damaging the inlay.
  2. Avoid exposure to direct sunlight, which can fade the wood veneers and inlays.
  3. Use mild wood polish or wax sparingly to maintain the finish without over-saturating the delicate surfaces.

Conclusion

This desk and corner table are excellent examples of fine craftsmanship, likely inspired by 18th-century European designs. Their intricate inlay work and good condition make them appealing to collectors and enthusiasts of decorative antique furniture. With appropriate marketing, they could fetch a significant amount, particularly in the right antique market.

Thank you for your help. I…

Thank you for your help. I am currently researching the past and it’s appearing that it is of the period and not a replica. Of that be the case just out of curiosity you said could be worth over $5k, how much more? I am wondering if I should have insurance for the piece separately or what? Thank you again for all your assistance.
