Chinese Vase, Tongzin dynasty

By Maggman, 12 January, 2025
Description

Hello, I believe I have Chinese antique vase from the Tongzhi dynasty and would like to know if this could be authentic. It appears to have been handpainted and has a red marking on the bottom that matches Internet searches showing Tongzhin 1862-1874, along with a second stamp 06 in a small triangle. I would like to know if this worth selling or possible value due to it being from that era. Thank you in advance.

Porcelain Vase Attributed to Qing Dynasty

Item Description: This is a porcelain vase attributed to the Tongzhi period of the Qing Dynasty (1862–1874). The vase is 12 inches high with a base measuring 3.5 square inches, a curved square top of 4 inches, and a 2.5-inch neck. It features hand-painted floral designs, possibly sealed with a clear coating. The base has a red seal stamp resembling Tongzhi-era marks, along with an additional "06" stamp within a triangle, which may indicate a later production detail.

Authenticity:

  • Marking: The red Tongzhi stamp is consistent with the era's style. However, reproductions of Qing Dynasty ceramics are common, so the authenticity of this piece requires further investigation by an expert in Chinese antiques.
  • Painted Design: The floral pattern appears hand-painted, which is a positive indicator, but the application technique and glaze should be analyzed closely to verify period consistency.
  • Triangle Mark: The "06" stamp within a triangle suggests the possibility of a reproduction or later export marking. Authentic Tongzhi porcelain would typically lack secondary marks of this kind.

Condition: The vase appears to be in excellent condition, with no visible cracks, chips, or repairs. This preservation enhances its value if it is authentic.

Historical Value: If authentic, the vase would hold significant historical and cultural value as an artifact from the Tongzhi era. Pieces from this period often reflect high craftsmanship but were produced in lower volumes compared to other Qing emperors' reigns.

Estimated Value:

  • Authentic Piece: Depending on the quality of the craftsmanship and verification of the Tongzhi mark, this vase could be valued between $1,000 to $5,000 at auction.
  • Reproduction: If it is determined to be a later reproduction, the value may range from $50 to $300, depending on decorative appeal.

Recommendation: To confirm the vase's authenticity and precise value:

  1. Consult with a professional appraiser specializing in Chinese antiques.
  2. Request an expert's opinion on the red seal and additional triangle mark, as well as the glaze and painting style.
  3. Consider contacting a reputable auction house or museum with a Chinese art department.
